BECOME A COLLEGE MENTOR
Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano invites you to join us as a College Mentor. for our seniors as they apply to colleges! Mentors are paired with Breakthrough’s high school seniors and meet monthly with them to assist with editing personal statements, creating college lists, applying to colleges and scholarships, and so much more. Each year, we are grateful to local volunteers who serve as mentors for our students, and value the enthusiasm and commitment that they bring to this work. The application for the 2024-2025 school year can be found here: APPLY, and is due May 5th, 2024.
Mentors offer support to students as they:
- Write personal statements.
- Research and create a list of universities.
- Apply to universities.
- Apply for scholarships.
- Apply for financial aid.
Mentors are expected to:
- Attend mandatory training and meet at least once a month with your student.
- Approach their role with compassion, responsibility and commitment.
- Demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to the intersections of identity (such as educational, economic, cultural and racial, gender, and sexual orientation).
- Have a strong desire to contribute to educational equity.
- Maintain flexibility and a willingness to learn and grow.
