BECOME A BREAKTHROUGH SJC STUDENT

Applying to Breakthrough SJC is a very selective process. The program is free to students, but we expect all students to work hard and fully commit to Breakthrough all the way through college graduation.

Applicants must meet two of the following:

Low-income household/Household makes under $ 80,000 yearly
First-generation: Parent(s) did not graduate college or university in the U.S.
Historically underrepresented in higher education

Applicants must meet all of the following:

Academically motivated with a minimum GPA of 3.5
Currently attending Marco Forster Middle School as a 6th-grade student
Committed to attending school year and summer programming
Attended one New Student Recruitment Info Meeting. Dates listed below

2024 Key Dates

New Student Online Application Due Date: February 16, 2024
Super Saturday (*in-person, students only): Saturday, March 2, 2024, 9:00 am -12:00 pm
Family In-person Interviews: March 11, 2024-March 28, 2024
Admission Decisions Announced: April 12, 2024
New Student Orientation & Pre-Summer Assessment: May 4, 2024, 9:00 am-2:00 pm

How to apply?

The first step is to attend one New Student Recruitment Info Meeting held on the following dates:

Tuesday, January 16, 2024, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Location: Multi-Purpose Room at Marco Forster Middle School
Tuesday, January 23, 2024, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Location: Boys & Girls Club, 1 Via Positiva, San Juan Capistrano
Thursday, January 25, 2024, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Location: Casa Unidos, 31341 Los Rios St, San Juan Capistrano

Note: The last two meetings on January 23 and January 25, 2024, are makeup sessions in the event that families cannot attend the meeting on January 16th.
