Tuesday night, Director Lorena Martinez gave a presentation about Breakthrough SJC to the Dana Point City Council. After learning about Breakthrough SJC during the program’s 2014 Visitors Day, Dana Point Mayor, Lisa Bartlett, was so inspired by Breakthrough SJC students and teachers that she invited Breakthrough to present at the Dana Point City Council Meeting on September 16, 2014. The presentation highlighted the program’s unique”students teaching students” model and informed the City Council and Dana Point residents on Breakthrough’s current successes and details of the 2014 summer program. As the presentation ended, Mayor Bartlett thanked Ms. Martinez for speaking, and pronounced, “Breakthrough is an incredible program for young students.”

After the meeting, Arisbeth Figueroa, Program Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley, spoke to Breakthrough SJC staff about the importance of Breakthrough and its mission of guiding students to college. Ms. Figueroa was impressed by one member of the Boys & Girls Club who showed more initiative about applying to college after receiving help from Breakthrough. We thank Arisbeth for sharing her story with us and we are thrilled to hear how both wonderful programs are working together to help students realize their academic potential!

We would also like to thank Mayor Bartlett and Dana Point City Council for inviting us to their meeting and allowing Breakthrough to share its positive story.
