Former Breakthrough student Rolando Perez was one of nine students nationwide awarded the I’m First Scholarship by Center for Student Opportunity (CSO). CSO is a national nonprofit aimed at empowering first-generation college students while they pursue their path to and during college. Rolando will receive $4,000 to spend over the course of his college career. In addition, Rolando will serve as a blogger on ImFirst.org where he will be able to share his college experiences and give advice to first-generation college students.

A current freshman at Pitzer College, Rolando published his first blog post on his freshman orientation adventures where he learned to surf. According to Rolando, “I can’t help but see my experience learning to surf as a metaphor for the year that is ahead. I will do my best to continue moving forward and build momentum to keep my metaphorical surfboard cutting through the waves threatening to send me back to shore.”

A big congratulations to Rolando for winning the I’m First Scholarship and a big thank you to Center for Student Opportunity for awarding Rolando with a scholarship while he pursues his college career. Read Roland’s blog post here.
